This Wordy Wednesday, we introduce you to the word This Wordy Wednesday, we introduce you to the word “koan”.

Pronounced “koh-en”, a koan is an anecdote or riddle without a solution, originally used in Zen Buddhism to illustrate the inadequacy of logical reasoning and provoke enlightenment.

Take this koan, for example: A Zen master held out his short staff and said, “If you call this a short staff, you oppose its reality. If you do not call it a short staff, you ignore the fact. Now what do you wish to call this?”

So, what say you — is it a short staff or isn’t it?

Koan can be used synonymously with words like paradox, puzzle, question or riddle. A koan you might have heard before is: If a tree falls in the forest with no one to hear it, does it make a sound? It matters not, for the tree has fallen.

Though the answer of this koan can be endlessly debated, Eastern philosophy says the point is not the noise it makes, but rather the loss of nature. 🌳#WordyWednesday #WordPlay #Grammar #EnglishLanguage #ThatCommsCo

If you’re looking to hire a caterer for an upcom If you’re looking to hire a caterer for an upcoming event but have a query about their vegan menu options, would you send an enquiry or an inquiry? What about if a whistleblower alerted authorities to the mistreatment of elderly residents in an aged care home – would this be the precursor to an inquiry or an enquiry into the matter?

Some argue that enquiry and inquiry can be used interchangeably without grammatical error, and indeed there’s little discernible difference when it comes to using them in conversation. However, traditionalists agree ‘enquiry’ refers to the act of simply asking for information – like making an enquiry with the caterer or leaving an enquiry with a tradesperson requesting a quote for a job you need done.

On the other hand, inquiry refers to a formal investigation by authorities. Police may launch an independent inquiry into the mistreatment of elderly residents in an aged care home, in the same way local detectives may launch an inquiry into an alleged people smuggling ring after an anonymous tipoff. #WordyWednesday #Wordsmith #WordPlay #Grammar #EnglishLanguage #ThatCommsCo
Did you know recruiters spend an average of seven Did you know recruiters spend an average of seven seconds reviewing CVs before deciding whether they want to keep reading? ⏱That’s a pretty tight window to make a good impression — which is why crafting a compelling, “glance-proof” CV is crucial for job seekers.
Pick up a copy of today’s SMARTDaily to read how 25-year-old engineering graduate Sachin Santhosh landed a job instantly after cutting his resume down to one page, and learn why @indeed_au’s Career Coach, Sally McKibbin, says it’s all about keeping it simple and relevant to the role you’re applying for. #IndeedAu #Jobseeking #Recruitment #Resumes #CVs

A highlight of the day was a fireside chat with Dylan Alcott AO who spoke with Indeed around the importance of making recruitment accessible and inclusive to the 4.6 million Australians living with a disability.

Thanks for having us Talent X and Indeed!

A silver lining of crises like the pandemic, the 2 A silver lining of crises like the pandemic, the 2020 bushfires, or the recent Queensland floods is that amid the chaos and devastation, the very best of humanity can emerge – with people responding to seeing others in trouble by doing what they can to lend a helping hand.

Succour describes just this. A mass noun defined as assistance, support or relief in times of hardship and distress, synonyms of succour include ‘aid’, ‘help’ and ‘backing’. If your sick elderly neighbour was receiving treatment for a chronic illness, for example, you might decide to take him some groceries and a hot, home-cooked meal to provide succour during a difficult time.

The word succour originates from Medieval Latin and is a derivative of the Latin verb ‘succurrere’ meaning “to run to the rescue” or “to bring aid”. #WordyWednesday #Wordsmith #WordPlay #Grammar #ThatCommsCo
Mental health issues are among the most common cha Mental health issues are among the most common challenges for men today, but despite this, men’s mental wellbeing often falls under the radar, particularly in the workplace.

@springfoxau Founder & CEO Stuart Taylor knows all too well the impact of burnout and poor mental health on one’s general wellbeing. Now 20 years ago, Stuart found himself burnt out from his high-pressure job and shortly after, was diagnosed with a grade 3 brain tumour and given two years to live.

Speaking with The CEO Magazine, Stuart discusses the importance of organisations supporting the mental health of male employees and why it’s so important to for men to feel they can speak up and ask for help. Read more through link in bio.
